Biography
Patchtax is a duo ensemble of viola and saxophone that strives to redefine the parameters of classical chamber music. The duo often collaborates with a range of performers and performs in many diverse environments. In addition to commissioning new works and transcribing duos for this instrumentation, the duo is interested in integrating theatrical approaches and sensory practices. Collaborations include those with rock bands, living composers, classical percussionists, dancers, electronic musicians, sound painting ensembles and more. In 2013, patchtax commissioned a set of works that pairs food and new music, creating a novel performance/sensory space. During January 2015, patchtax will be in residence at the Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts.

Patchtax, a viola and saxophone duo from Boston, will perform Georges Aperghis’ Rasch for soprano saxophone and viola. Aperghis describes this piece as an aural game of ping-pong between the viola and saxophone.We will also present short new works by emerging American composers. Our concert programs are performed uninterrupted. Transitions between musical pieces occur by performances of poetry and theatrical acts. Patchtax strives to create a new and exciting atmosphere for experiencing classical music.
