“Four Woodland Sketches” by Michael Mikulka, was originally written for two flutes but has been arranged for two soprano saxophones for this conference. Each of the four movements represents a different character or emotion, ranging from Messiaen-like birdsong in the first and second movements to a high-energy race in the fourth movement. “Morse Code Pop,” originally scored for Alto saxophone and Baritone Saxophone, for has been re-invented by Houston composer Rob Smith specifically for this conference and placed into the soprano and alto voices of the saxophone. “Morse Code Pop” features aggressive articulated syncopation with a lyrical, floating middle section. The two drastically different pieces showcase the saxophone’s versatility as an instrument capable of lyrical, soaring melodies and aggressively articulated syncopated lines.
