This lecture traces the journey of Aaron Copland’s QUIET CITY from being composed as incidental music for a play, to being recast into two orchestral works, and its recent re-emergence in its original chamber instrumentation for saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, and piano.

Discussion includes Copland’s artistic ideas on the subject of adapting music for the concert stage as illustrated when he spoke about The Red Pony suite: “In shaping the suite I recast much of the musical material so that, although all the music may be heard in the film, it has been reorganized as to continuity for concert purposes.”

The lecture concludes with investigating how QUIET CITY was restored through association with The Aaron Copland Fund for Music and Boosey & Hawkes. As a historically relevant piece, it has taken an intriguing journey from incidental music to the concert stage. This important music by an iconic American composer may now be performed and enjoyed for the first time in its entirety and for the original ensemble.
