Line Dances and Heavy Metal

Angela Space will perform two pieces inspired by popular music : San Antonio by J. Harbison and a world premiere of her own piece Full Stop Suicide, with piano and electric guitar.

Biography

Angela Space is a saxophonist and educator at the University of Southampton (UK). She studied with Lynn Klock, Steven Mauk and Gary Keller. She has performed with the Temptations, the Florida Philharmonic and the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas. She performs in the Pioneer Saxophone Quartet and has been previously selected to perform on the World Saxophone Congress. Whilst still a student Space was a finalist in the NASA classical competition.

Space is also a popular musician, guitarist, vocalist and composer having composed numerous songs and various pieces for piano and saxophone. She plays under the moniker Rainbow Reservoir and her music has been played on BBC 3 and BBC 6. She has opened for artists such as Thomas Truax, Cate LeBon, and Tacocat.

The proposed programme will feature two pieces, San Antonio (Sonata for alto saxophone and piano) by John Harbison, and a premiere composition, Full Stop Suicide (for alto saxophone, electric guitar and piano) by saxophonist Angela Space. Both pieces are influenced by and use structures found in popular music and combine these elements with contemporary classical saxophone performance techniques.
