Fuse members are Matthew Sintchak (saxophone), David Gould (clarinet), and Clara Christian (piano).
More information
The Fuse Trio (saxophone, clarinet, piano) has commissioned three new works by Paquito D’Rivera, Phil Woods, and Christian Ellenwood that will be premiered in Strasbourg, France. All performances will be world premieres with the exception of the piece by Ellenwood, which will be a European premiere.
“La Fleur de Cayenne,” by Paquito D’Rivera for clarinet, tenor saxophone, and piano is the French name of the hibiscus, the beautiful Caribbean flower. The piece – except for the lyrical introduction – is mainly written in the form of a dynamic “Joropo,” the most representative of Venezuelan rhythms. This work was completed in June 2014 for the Fuse Trio.
“With Love for Jill” by Phil Woods for clarinet, alto saxophone, and piano was also written for the Fuse Trio in April 2014. It is dedicated to Phil Woods’ “Lovely Wife Jill”.
“upon finding absence” by Christian Ellenwood was composed for Matt Sintchak and David Gould and premiered at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2014 at the North American Saxophone Alliance national conference. The composition by Ellenwood is born from a close friendship between him and jazz saxophonist Scott Rademacher. After pursuing divergent life paths for several years, Christian attempted to find Scott through an internet search, and, instead of contact information, found a memorial video for his friend, who had died 14 months previously. The composition explores the intense mix of emotions Christian felt in this moment; the joy of memory, the shock of discovery, intense regret, and the pain of loss.
